Bras – Here’s what I’ve learnt!

Did you know that 8 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong bra size?! That’s quite a lot isn’t it?

I recently went bra shopping in my local town because I felt that my bras were not fitting me correctly anymore. I decided to try Debenhams and Marks and Spencer. Now, I usually like M&S but I thought I would try Debenhams for a change. I regret that decision as soon as I entered the fitting rooms. However, all was not lost as I had a second bra fitting in M&S and this was an incredibly amazing experience. So, I am going to share with you a few tips I have learnt from my experience:

If you’re spilling over, the band rides up at the back or the centre of your bra is not flat to your chest – You need a new bra!

These are common signs that you really are wearing the wrong bra. These three reasons are why I recently went to get bra fitted because I hated how I was spilling out of my bra, the back was riding up all the time and the bra was not flat to my chest! It was so annoying! Do not allow for these issues as there is a bra out there for you which is going to sit flat to your chest, you’re not going to spill over or the band is not going to ride up! These are not ‘common signs’ or bra wearing. These are signs that you are in the wrong bra! Do not settle for this and go and get re-fitted for a new bra!

Just because you’re getting bra fitted, it doesn’t mean you have to take their advice – Wear whatever you feel is comfortable.

When I went bra shopping in Debenhams, I was told that due to my ‘size’, that’s bra size, I should be wearing maternity bras because they will give me ‘more coverage’. While this woman was only trying to help me, this is NOT what I should be doing. I can wear whatever I want underneath my clothes, even if that means no bra at all! Wearing a maternity bra is not something I felt comfortable with. Do not feel obliged to buy something unless you are 100% happy with it, otherwise it is a total waste of money and you will never wear it again! Make sure you buy something which is tailored to you, and only you. After all, you wear these bad boys a long time on a daily basis! You want to feel great in it!

Sometimes a practical bra, is the best bra.

I suppose this one slightly contradicts the above but I mean in the sense of patterns and colours. I am a sucker for beautifully coloured bras with pretty lace detail, but are they practical under my nice sheer blouses for work? No they’re not. Owning a bra which looks quite boring, doesn’t mean you are a boring person. If it is the comfiest bra ever and you can wear it all day long then who cares?! A bra is for you at the end of the day, not for anyone else!

Don’t just get bra fitted in one store – Get a second opinion!

I am totally strong about this one! Especially with my experience. I had an awful fitting in Debenhams but when I went to M&S it was fantastic. She went the extra mile for me and made me feel really comfortable in my own skin. Something which I did NOT feel in Debenhams. If you don’t like one store, don’t be put off. It’s really important that you get bra fitted and that you are wearing the right size for your body!

Don’t stick to what you know – Try new styles!

I am a sucker for sticking to the same style of bra because I feel like this is the only one which is best for me. But, my recent bra fit made me try a few different styles which I never even gave a second thought about! Just because it may not look ‘right’ or ‘strange’ on the hanger, just give it a go! You never know until you try and it may actually be the most comfiest thing you have ever tried! Don’t be afraid ladies!

A label is just a label. Do not compare yourself to others!

If you go up a cup size, or up a back size but drop in the cup then it doesn’t matter. Your bra size only exist because of your back size. So just because someone is a certain size, it doesn’t mean anything. Here is an example, if you were a D cup, then this is a bust measurement that is roughly 4 inches bigger than the under-bust measurement! 32D and a 42D have nothing in common with each other, except that they both have the letter D in! So don’t be fooled into thinking that if you have a small back that you don’t need a bigger cup! Every person is different and I know we can’t help but compare ourselves to each other, but we really shouldn’t! You are your size and as long as you concentrate on that then you shouldn’t worry about anything else.

So ladies, to summarise this post, don’t just assume your bra size! Go and get measured! Your body changes all the time and therefore you could have fluctuated in size since you last bought a bra. Don’t be uncomfortable, there is a bra out there for you! Also don’t be judgemental, just because someone is a D cup and there boobs look nowhere near as big as yours because you’re also a D cup, doesn’t make them not that size! A bra cup size is defined by your back measurements!

Hope you like the post.
